I go on tangents, huh?
Anyway, a few weeks ago I heard this song. (Do not play if you have children near. The title is Sex on Fire and your kids will be singing it...
You've been warned.
I know I've heard the Kings of Leon before. But something about this song really struck me. Well, a few things did. But the lead singer's voice has a quality that I really like. Something I cannot place per se. If you are home alone, play the song without looking at the photos that are on youtube. Listen to his voice.
Okay, if you listened to his voice first, which is what I did, he somehow sounds...Earthy? Folksy? Wood Chopping in the foresty??? I see a plaid shirt and an ax or something. I thought maybe his voice reminded me of Cat Stevens, when Cat is pushing for a note. But then I listened to them both, and no.
I played the song for Aaron and his response was, "it sounds like a cheap Pearl Jam."
Which I disagreed with. Nobody sounds like my Eddie. But I think I get what Aaron is noticing and saying.
(I just spent like an hour watching my Eddie on all kinds of videos. OMG I still love the man...)
I did some research, and it turns that Kings of Leon toured with Eddie, so I can see they might have been influenced.
Anyway, now go back and look at the pictures. These boys are way too pretty and androgynous in their skinny jeans with their hipster hair to come at me over the radio like they do. Voice and looks do not go together.
However, even though typical pretty boys are not my thing...hello lead singer! You might be closer to my son's age than mine, but hubba hubba!

Can anyone say, "duh her sex is on fire, look at you!"
Okay, the other thing that struck me about the song is how uncomfortable I am with the lyrics. I mean, this song is not very romantic. It's not trying to be I know. But, I always imagine the songs that are about a girl. I always want inside the girl's head. I imagine this girl is a little ticked.
When I was a senior in high school, The Verve Pipe was about to hit it big. And since they were from Michigan I had the chance to see them at a small venue. By small I mean they were playing at my friend's sorority at Western Michigan's campus. The song Victoria, was written for one of the Sorority sisters.
Rumor had it, their relationship was more of a fling. But hey, she got a song out of it, right?
And how about Hey There Delila? I mean, nobody believes that he was actually going to stay with this girl and be true to her after he hit it big, but how nice were the words of that song???
Sex on Fire doesn't even pretend.
Smashing Pumkins wrote a song called Starla
Starla Dear,
I'm all alone
Starla dear
please take me home...
In the notes on the CD, Billy apologizes to Darla
for getting her name wrong
All I'm saying is, Darla, he wrote you a nice song even if he didn't remember your name!
Even T.I., the rapper tries to give romance
Here is T.I on Chelsea Lately
He is the last person I would expect to be more romantic, than the Nashville boys of Kings of Leon.
There's no real point to this except
my new boyfriend is not very romantic
and while it bugs me
it doesn't bug me that much
I mean, hey, if he wants to hook up with an older woman and write a song about it
even if it's more filthy than romantic
I'm his girl!

First, congratulations on your new boyfriend. I never got into American rock. I found a lot of these bands don't even try to sound unique. (On the other hand, it's not like my favorite indy bands are any different). Nothing against your boyfriend, though. I kinda like the song. I can see it growing on me. That's what she said.
I have a DEEP Inner fuckin hatred for Pearl Jam, after reading that you love them, I stopped reading your post lol, but I started it back up again & I enjoyed all the non praising pearl Jam Parts... lol
You get an A+ for your intricate research on this post... oh yeah and for the AWESOME music!
I have no idea what he is saying. I understand maybe every 5th word (does this mean I am getting old?). I do, however, get the hubba hubba part.
I DO like that new Kings of Leon song myself...
Get a grip woman.
I'm a big indie fan, that's why I love LastFM. It's great for finding all that hard to find, rarely heard great stuff. Ugh Nickleback. YUK!
all my rock star boyfriends end of breaking my heart. usually by finding some trashy actressy girlfriend.
They're pretty fantastic, the Kings of Leon. Check out their earlier albums - "Aha, Shake, Heartbreak" and "Youth and Young Manhood". They're sublime.
